How Much Is Too Much?

I know you dont need to feed a BP more than once every 7-10 days but what if you do? What if when you feed it, you give it two mice? My BP is around 5 months old and I know Im supposed to switch to rats or bigger mice around the time its gets to about 7 months but I wanted to know if this would do something to it (eg worst case scenario it dies).

Re: How Much Is Too Much?

I don't think you have to worry too much. Most snakes can self-regulate and go on long fasts (refuse food) when they don't need it. As long as you aren't force-feeding, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

HOWEVER; if your snake is female, she might tend to eat more, move around less and fast less often than males. A fat snake is unhealthy, it causes extra fat to build up in the liver and shortens the lifespan.
Two mice isn't too much, but there is a lot more hair (which snakes can't digest) and not as much meat on mice than there is on rats. In general, a proper sized rat (one that is about as thick as the fattest part of your snake's body) is enough food for a BP once every 7-10 days.

Another reason not to feed more often: you shouldn't handle your snake for 2 to 3 days after eating; if you feed more than every 7-10 days, you won't have any time for handling your snake!

I hope that helps!

Re: How Much Is Too Much?

Its recommended to fed one prey items about the size of the snake's body at the widest point every 7-10 days. Multiples that supply approximately the same amount of food are fine but produce more waste.
As long as you don't over do it. Some people seriously overfeed in order to get maximum growth in minimum time. Its called "powerfeeding" and results in a very unhealthy situation

Re: How Much Is Too Much?

Usually when I feed him, by the next day he looks like he's pretty much digested everything. But this time that isn't the case. He looks a LOT fatter than he did 2 nights ago so I assume that he's still digesting the two mice that he had. Mind you, these two mice were bigger than the hoppers that he was eating prior to these bigger ones.

Re: How Much Is Too Much?

Another thing I wanted to mention is that a snake needs A LOT of energy to digest its food. It uses about 50% of the energy calories of the rat, just to digest it!
Generally it's a race against time as the rat starts to rot inside the snake, so the digestive process has to go faster. That is why snakes won't eat if they are too cold. Cold slows down their systems and the rat will rot before they can digest it. This will usually result in a regurgitated rat or it could kill the snake.
Keeping all this in mind, it is really better to space feedings further apart, but give a proper sized mouse or rat. It's a good idea to weigh the mouse or rat before the feedings and then you can keep more accurate records on when to go to the next size or feed two.
Now that Monty eats 120-160g rats, I usually only feed him once every 3 weeks. (Even then he usually refuses a meal when he's not ready.)
