Feeding Box
Hi
![]() Just read the thread on feeding out of his/her usual enclosure. What size of plastic box do you use for feeding your ball python? Not sure what you mean by a sweater box? Like a large not too deep storage box? Just a new member and getting a feel for things, as I am seriously considering getting a ball python. Just trying to be wise and find out things in advance so we are prepared and have good advice. from Fiona |

Re: Feeding Box
Exactly. I actually used just a little plastic storage box when mine were babies. It was about 12"x8"x8". Now I use a 3'x3'x2' plastic storage container. Great choice for a starter snake. I have 3 ball pythons that I have had for about 4 years and never even been struck at by any of them. They are amazing snakes. If you might be interested in a cool morph like a pastel or pin stripe talk to Tracy at VPI.com. I just ordered 2 pastels from her. She is always willing to work out a good deal.

Re: Feeding Box
A feeding container can be just about anything. I use sterilite containers for my feeding tubs. Since I have a new rack on the way for Leopard Geckos, I am using my older 26 quart sterilites for the ball pythons. I have a 90 quart sterilite I am using for my boa and I use a spare ten gallon tank for my cornsnake.
All of my snakes take frozen-thawed, so I just add their prey, toss the cover on, and cover the whole thing for an hour with a towel. I come back in an hour or so and check to see who has and hasn't eaten. (Ball pythons will refuse prey periodically, depending on the BP, and this is not abnormal.) Everyone then gets placed back in their enclosure and I don't intentionaly bother them for 2 days. |

Re: Feeding Box
Thanks for this. Just what I was wondering, making an alternative use for an item.
Thanks for the measurements. I guess common-sense would dictate: as long as the snake can fit in alright. from Fiona |

Re: Feeding Box
Yea pretty much if the snake will fit inside it'll be fine. Basically you're just using it for feeding, not really much else. For my snakes I use the large size Kritter Keepers (those plastic bins with lids they usually sell at pet stores for mice, hermit crabs, etc). They have some space but their sides still touch the sides of the bins since they like to curl up. Not a big deal.
Rubbermaid containers will work too. Anything with a secure lid so they can't get out. ![]()

Re: Feeding Box
Yep, I use plastic storage tubs about the size of a shoebox to feed my baby ball pythons in. They have a secure lid so they can't escape while I'm warming up their food with a hair dryer.
Since the lids fit so snugly, I drilled some holes along the sides of the boxes near the top. And plastic is great in terms of clean up.Ball pythons are great. I've had my 2 babies for a month now (never owned a reptile before) and am completely in love with them. Sounds like you're doing all your homework...smart! This place is a fantastic resource. |
