And be sure to get the set-up done before you get the snake. Its important to have heat and humidity correct before you get your new inhabitant.

HaHa, I've heard those and more, lol @ smelly
I have 2 girls, 12 and 4 living with me, and my 12 year old was horrified I'd want to bring a snake into the house, lol.
She quickly got over all the fear, and now begs to hold one of the snakes everyday, hehe. My 4 year old never had been around a snake, only re-acted like her sister did till I got my first snake home, then she was all over it and just loves to hold them in her lap for a short supervised time, 10 minutes tops for her, being a 4 yr old.
People with phobias I know, have turned fairly quickly into "wow, thats neat" when they actually get some close up time.
I've had corn snakes and now ball pythons, and most my friends have been more afraid of the corn? lol, as it wriggles more, wants to roam faster, and is generally alot more active than the ball python.
They are all beautiful in their own way.
And I second what schlegelbagel said, make sure enclosure/tank is set up properly before making a rush purchase, makes things go sooo much smoother for you and the snakey. : )

Re: How Do People You Know React to Your Snake?
I used to work in a pet store and always liked to watch the snakes, I thought they were cool. Then it became my job to care for and feed them so I got hands on experience with them. I really came to enjoy it and really wanted one. Parents said no.
After awhile I was able to convince them to let me get one. But ONLY if it lived in the pet store. Well one weekend I brought the snake home (with permission) and after a few times of doing that, I brought it home permanently. My dad will look at them but not touch them. My sister and mom didn't really like them at first but after holding them they're okay with them. Now I have 3.
My cousins are so so about them, my grandmom (no!), my one friend loves to hold one of the snakes, my other friend would prefer to just watch.

Re: How Do People You Know React to Your Snake?
I come from an east indian background and my family is, for the most part, religious muslims and so I usually get a negative response when I tell people within my family that I now have a ball python (particularly my mother!) but once they get to see it and hold it or even watch others hold it and SEE how tame it is, they almost always change their minds about it. I guess many people are ignorant towards snakes and think every snake that walks (or slithers lol) on the face of the earth can inject venom or kill you. Its better to educated them instead of arguing with them. Some people just dont want to learn and those are the people you ignore lol.

Yes, thanks for all these replies!
I have heard about getting your set-up right before bringing home your pet, seems like a good idea to me.
Wow to work in a pet shop and look after snakes, I bet you loved that job.
No, my husband is not threatening divorce over this yet LOL.

Re: How Do People You Know React to Your Snake?
My snake usually lives at school. It has been interesting to see parents that don't want her out or near them but they think it is great that their kids are holding her and comfortable with her. When she first came to us, we had a few kids in the building that were very afraid of her but I think watching K/1 students carry her around helped them see that maybe it wasn't so bad after all. I always promised the kids and adults who were not comfortable around her that I would not let her get near them unless they wanted to. One of the teachers made it her goal to touch Mustache and by the end of the school year she held her. She told me how proud she was that she had done it! Mustache is spending the summer with one of my student's. He loves her, his dad had snakes before getting married, his mother doesn't want anything to do with her but she was the one who thought they should take her for the summer.

Re: How Do People You Know React to Your Snake?
While working at the pet store I work at, I always get a kick out of parents that won't come near a baby boa, but will shove there kids towards it, "Pet the little snake timmy!, It won't bite, me, i'll be right here" (by here I mean about 12' away)
It never fails to crack me up.
I Wish I had a Animal specific room, or a lounge I could use,
I still live at home, and here The golden rule for all of my animals is that the cages have to all be in my room, which means right now there is:
A Schneider's Skink,
A White Spotted Wall Gecko,
A Boa Constrictor,
A Coastal Carpet Python,
A Red Eared Slider (The Rescue that came into Petco)
And now recently A Baby Emperor Scorpion (about the size of a nickel).
Not to mention my Two fish tanks, (15 gallon and 65 gallon) and a pair of bettas.
My Room looks a bit like a zoo...
People scared of snakes tend to stay away...

Re: How Do People You Know React to Your Snake?
Just said to my husband
"What pet would you least like to have, a cat, chicken or snake?" He replied "A Cat, I hate cats!"
So there you go, obviously not somebody who is against the idea, just a bit nervous, as he has never handled a snake.

Re: How Do People You Know React to Your Snake?
Ive learned not to advertise it, as my biggest gal 8' might cause alarm in the neighborhood and then there might be problems if I bring her out on the yard, but now im looking to bring her in the back yard to do that, other than that, ppl at work, share stories, ask questions but aren't negative but rather curious. I don't let ppl come see the snakes except ppl who pick up feeders from me.
