like 75% humidity. how do I keep the humidity down in my snake's tank, so he doesn't get sick?

i swear, some day i'll be able to answer my own questions... O:-)

What is the humidity reading inside of the tank?

It's okay for it to get around 60%, and temporary high humidity isn't going to have a negative effect if the snake is being cared for properly and has good health.

How long is the high humidity forecasted to last?

i mean, i'm originally from california, so I don't really know chicago weather. but my guess is that this is kind of a permanent thing... at least for summer. it's supposed to rain the next 10 days and be in the 70˚s-80˚s... and I don't have ac.

Lacey asked the big question - what's the humidity inside the tank. It doesn't matter how humid it is outside unless it does effect the tank inside. We have pretty high humidity here in TN, too (I'm also a CA transplant!) and it may be 75%+ humidity outside, but inside I have trouble keeping it up past 40%-50%.

right now it's hovering at about 65% inside the tank... it was 50% until it got nasty outside. so i'm a little concerned... but yeah, the weather is definitely affecting the tank. suggestions? btw, where in ca?

Unless you have a dehumidifier running in the room it will be pretty tough, but running a small table-top fan over the op of the tank will help dry out the immediate air. Right now he'll be ok...but you might want to pick up a fan and prepare just in case it goes over the 60% mark.

I was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Bay Area (Oakland, Concord, Pittsburg). We moved to TN when my kids were still pretty young...4 and 8. That was almost 17 yrs ago and I love every minute here. I sometimes miss the busy-ness of the big city...but I wouldn't change living out here in the stix for anything. For a day of city we just drive into Nashville a couple of hours away...

jeez, it's a small world!! i'm from the bay area, too. my parents live in menlo park... like 10 minutes away from stanford university. i definitely miss san fran... and I miss the ocean! lake michigan just doesn't cut it for me, even though it is gorgeous.

anyway, i'll start that fan up right now. good idea. where can I find a dehumidifier? it's funny... when I first got makiwan, i had to try and up the humidity. i never would have thought i'd be trying to make it go down!

It is a small world! I know Menlo Park! And I definitely miss SF! So much to do! One of my fav. cheap dates with my husband was going to Pier 39 or Fisherman's Wharf and trying all the free tasters...but we would get the oyster crackers and toss them on the sidewalk and watch the seagulls dive for them freakin' the people out. Seagulls are bold there....

The dehumidifier wouldn't need to be very big, but they're still a little costly at $150-$200. Here's a link from Lowe's for what to compare to anyway. The smaller one would probably be all you need if you're simply going for one room: Dehumidifiers

awwh!! i wanna go back haha. when was the last time you were there? i visited the fam over winter break this year, but I haven't been back since early january...

$150?! ay ay ay. i think i'm going to have to get creative... or hope that the humidity goes down. :-\...

It's easily been 12-13 yrs since I've been back. Hubby hasn't been back since we moved here.

Hopefully the fan will work enough for you. It should at least dry the immediate area out some. My fingers will be crossed for you. Make sure you let us know if the fan works!
