How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
The past couple days, Dexter has spent 100% (at least when I am home and awake) in his humidity box. I had to redampen the coconut fiber yesterday because it had gotten really dried, and I put a little too much water on it so now it is very very damp. But he is all curled up sleeping in there ALL THE TIME.
I had him out last night, because I was concerned that maybe something was wrong. But he acted perfectly normal. Wrapped around my hair. Investigated things. So should I be concerned that he is spending that much time in the humidity box? Or is that normal? |

Re: How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
Nope! It just sounds like the box is to his liking!

Re: How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
Mine does the same thing...He will come out a bit at night but for the most part he is ALWAYS in there...I just assumed he liked it in there because when I got him from his previous owner the hide he had was a half a log thing and it was huge-taking up most of the available floor space in his tank! From what I have been told from several people in here BP's like their hides to be sort of snug. once I made him his current humidity box he spends all his time in it...I guess I did good

Re: How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
Does he have a regular hide spot? If not he may be using the humidity box as a hide spot. Is he about to shed? If all your husbandry's good then he is more than likely fine. Just check him and make sure he doesnt form blisters.

Re: How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
That's why I took him out and checked him really good last night. I'd heard that too much humidity could cause stomach rot. But he's fine. At first his abdomen looked pinkish, but I think it was just the lighting, because in brighter light, it looked normal and he acted very normal. He has the humidity box and he has a separate hide on the other end of the enclosure.
But this is the first time I've ever given him a humidity box, so this could just be his normal way of acting with it. I tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac when it comes to my pets. |

Re: How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
It's not so much humidity but rather a subtrate that is aways wet and is not very clean.
Nothing like laying around in wet feces to cause skin problems. Quote:

Re: How Long is Too Long in Humidity Box?
Really? I never noticed that before. I'd notice when he went into "blue" phase and get all cloudy, but I never noticed the pink before. (So I guess when I tried to feel his forehead to see if he had a fever, once again, he probably thought I was nuts?)
(This poor snake probably thinks he has the strangest human in the world. WHen I first got him, he crawled into a papertowel roll that was almost empty. I panicked and thought he was stuck. Ran around like a maniac, all the while holding him in my arms and telling him it was going to be okay. Finally "solved" the problem by putting Dexter (paper towel roll and all) into a plastic tote box and gently pouring luke warm water over the papertowel roll until it became wet enough that it just split right down the middle. When I sent a panic e-mail to the rescue group asking if I should take him to the vet or if they thought he'd be okay, they informed me that he could probably have gotten out anytime he wanted and was just enjoying the tight space. Poor Dexter.....his mama is nuts! |

Saturday, I hadn't seen any action from him at all, so I peeked at him. All cloudy! So now I'm waiting (im)patiently for the first shed since I gave him a humidity box. (I'm hoping it will go well.) Thanks for talking me down from one of my many hypochondria induced ledges. |
