Oscar Had His First Chick.
Oscar had his first chick today.
![]() it was a live chick, it's just wet because he didn't seemed interested in it until I wet the chick to unfluff its feathers and make it appear smaller.

Re: Oscar Had His First Chick.
the ones I have I got at a local reptile show.
got 10 of them for $5. as for other places, theres farm supply stores and various online places. i've heard that McMurrayHatchery.com Home Page is a good place to get chickens from. might even be able to get them from local farms. however, unless you know the place is selling them as food, it might be best to not mention getting them for snakes.

Re: Oscar Had His First Chick.
One warning when using poultry as feeders. The snake's droppings will be a lot more odorous and loose!

Re: Oscar Had His First Chick.
i just know poultry has alot of funky stuff in it. are snakes immune, or is there some precautions you have to take to ensure you get "clean" chickens?

Re: Oscar Had His First Chick.
You raise a good point.
I wouldn't think it would be so bad with newly hatched chicks but many chickens raised for human food are treated with antibiotics and hormones. And I doubt sincerely that they have been tested for safety as snake food! That said I know that a of of keepers of burms and retics and other big guys use chickens as a cheaper feeder.

Re: Oscar Had His First Chick.
Specter
I raise chicks for my burmese python. What I look for when choosing chicks at a feed store, is a clean enviroment the cleaner the more I will pay.... I also look for "organic" chicks(ususally for people food, not eggs), Chickens are usually vaccinated and shot full of hormones when they are still egg form, and it continues into adult-hood,. I use organic chicken starter, without the chemicals, and antibiotics, and make sure to clean the cage every day. Chicken poo is really gross, and can make you and the chicks really sick (part of the reason they are pumped with antibiotics)

Re: Oscar Had His First Chick.
i had always heard that chickens were one of the healthiest things that you could feed a snake.
is that true? lord knows the internet isn't full of truth.
