Multiple Balls in Single Enclosure

What do you guys think about having multiple ball pythons in a single enclosure? I've had my current ball for about a month now. Hes about a foot and a half long, and im looking to add another one to its current enclosure. Would this be a good idea? If so, what size tank should I upgrade to, if necessary, and what are some things that I should know before doing this? Thanks.

the common thought is that housing snakes togetheris not a good idea. some people do and it works out ok the only problem is if it doesnt! theres no real good way to tell if the snakes will get along it maY stress them out but to play devils advocate I house 2 snakes together and havet had any problems

Re: Multiple Balls in Single Enclosure

i think many people may tell you that its not a good idea. most reptiles are solitary animals and would rather be by themselves. when you have two or more animals together in one enclosure it does a few things:

1.) it makes it much harder to monitor who is pooping.

2.) it may cause stress to one or all of the critters

3.) if you are unsure of sexes and put them together you may have breeding attempts before herps are of a safe size and weight, this can also result in stress to males and females involved. and sometimes with more than one male you can have some dominance issues.

4.) if one or more of the animals is sick or has a parasite, it can easily transfer to a cagemate, resulting in treatment for more than one critter.

5.) even if you do have more than one in an enclosure and everything seems fine, its not always a guarantee that it will always stay okay.

hopefully this will help out. i've tried to house my two corns together, they did not get along at all. be ready to have separate enclosures, space and all necessary equipment in the event that you have to separate everyone.

well, if you do infact have a male, it would be wise not to house another with it, i have seen 0 problems with people havin 2 females together for a few weeks for moving reasons, but I dont recomend male/male housing, they can get aggressive... and of course as stated above, male/female housing can cause an early breeding for small females, and unneeded stress... =]

I agree with everyone else. One to an enclosure is always better.

Ball python enclosures, fortunately are fairly simple. Setting one for each python may actually be cheaper than trying to buy a huge tank to keep both of them in. And, as was mentioned, it's much better for you to keep track of the snakes' health as well.

Re: Multiple Balls in Single Enclosure

as far as I know an adult ball python needs at least a 40 gallon breeder. So to house two, you couldn't get away with anything less then a 75 gallon tank. A 75 gallon tank and lid, would probaly cost you about $200, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less.
for $200 you could probaly build about 4, 40 breeder equivilant wooden enclosures, abd thats using nice plywood, and real glass front.

Re: Multiple Balls in Single Enclosure

i've seen pictures of snakes that ate there cage mate. not a pretty sight.
even saw one that ate a snake that was a bit larger then it, it ended up dying as a result.

wish I saved the pic. can't find it now.

Re: Multiple Balls in Single Enclosure

Yeah, I wouldn't house any more than one snake per enclosure. For the snakes sake.
