Bedding Question

We took mya (sons ball python) to the vet last week she had a reptile version of a hemroid and the vet told me we were using the wrong bedding that we should be using large aquarium rocks a few days later I talked to the pet store guy where we got her and he said defiantly do not put them in there I should continue to use the ceder chips . i also heard paper towels what do u all use or suggest?

Re: Bedding Question

I wouldn't use rocks.

The best thing to use right now would be newspaper, paper towels, tiles or carpet, something non-particulate that wont stick to the vent if she prolapses again.

Just make sure she has lots of hiding places if you aren't using a substrate she can hide in.

Re: Bedding Question

Rocks,...not a good idea. Impossible to spot clean and will not help hold humidity.
Cedar,..NO! Its toxic to small animals. No animal should be on cedar shavings! Do not listen to anything a petstore tells you if they recommend cedar for snakes.

I agree with Lacey. For the time being simply use sheets of paper.

Re: Bedding Question

After you are sure that the prolapse will not return you can use wood shavings, either aspen or cypress mulch.
They will help hold humidity better than just paper. But paper works to if you can solve the humidity problem.

Re: Bedding Question

pet stores are completly clueless and suprisingly most vets are to. Even exotic vets are. they know medically but there not trained to know husbandry.

i personally use cocofibre for all of our snakes. its sold in many petshops and online stores in dry compressed bricks that you soak in water to expand. its also often used in terrariums and vivariums for animals besides snakes. like turtles, frogs, toads, and salamanders. its natural, doesn't decay too fast, and is excellent at holding moisture.

our corn snake, milk snake, and ribbon snake love borrowing in it.
