My New Female Python...
i bought a new beautiful female royal python 1 yr old last week, before I bought her I breifly gave her a check over, every thing seemed ok... got her set up in her on viv only to realise what looked like which is now confirmed, she has red mites and 2 ticks.. aarrrrr
, well I thought id take both my new female and my 4 yr old male royals to the vet because STILL my male hasnt eaten since november since last year and is looking very dehydrated, got to bath him every day and keep trying him food (any ideas) and for my female I am treating her with xeno 200 spray daily.... (any thoughts ) they are both in seperate vivs on top of each other, my male is very active in the morning and never seems stressed?? are they to close to each other....please post any thoughs as I think im doing somthing wrong |

Re: My New Female Python...
a vet visit is probaly the best thing for both of them, to make sure that everything is alright. mites are treatable, but ive never heard of red mites, probably because of my inexperience. my male boa hasnt eaten in a little over a month, and I talked to this guy that has a lot of snakes about it. he said that he got a ball python from a guy that hadnt eaten in over a year! sometimes they fast and it is normal. but most deffinately take them to the vet and get them checked out. If the vivs are that close, your male is almost sure to get mites as well. I would seperate them, and treat both of them. Make sure to also treat their enclosures, as well as any furniture, water dishes, and any other accessories that are in there. Throw out the bedding and use paper towels, but make sure to change them every day. Is it alright to use the spray every day? I'm not familiar with the xeno spray, but on the mite sprays that I have used and seen, the bottle says to use it every 3 to 4 days.
With your male, trying to feed him too often will stress him out. As I was told on here, if he doesn't eat on his regular feeding day, don't try to feed him again until the next feeding day. Also, i was told that if you handle your snake a lot, he could become distracted, and not eat. I don't know if this is a valid statement, so if anyone that reads this knows, please tell me. Make the vet appointment, and take care of the mites. I hope all goes well, and I hope I helped you. If I havent then im sorry, and just disregard what I said lol. Best wishes!

Re: My New Female Python...
thanks for your reply, i did take them both to the vet as I stated above, the female ive just got to treat with spray, but the male seems worse with not eatin, the vet said ive got to bathe him daily upto an hour at a time (which he HATES) and check his weight, ive bumped humidity up and the heat, the vet wants me to try and get him to shed, hes always active, but I just thought winter season is breeding time and if the female is above the male in seperate vivs is this still to close???

Re: My New Female Python...
i personally think that is still too close. seperate rooms if you can would be better. it is better to be safe, than to have to deal with two horrible cases of mites. even with spraying the female, if the mites are reproducing in both vivs, it will be really hard and to get rid of all of them, and it could take a long time. OH! And make sure you wash your hands after handling them. When I'm around a snake with mites, I wash my clothes before I handle my own snakes.
