First Reptile Rescue.

Well in the past I have helped a few animals find a good home. Just recently I had found a min pin that was left outside in the freezing weather and was under weight. So I took it in, got his weight up, made sure he had no signs of illness, made sure he was suitable for a home with children (luckily having a 6month old son helped us find out) and all the little issues that come up with dogs (getting near his food while eating, potty training, barking, biting, ect.) and he did fantastic, no problems what so ever, it was a shame that someone would abandon him like that.. So he found a home very fast. Well I recently got a call about a friend having a ball python that he isn't taking care of properly and just doesn't want him and doesn't have the time. Well I picked him up today and already have a home arranged for him with a friend who has worked with the local animal shelter rescuing exotic animals. Well I have always remembered not to judge people for their miscare of their animals (excluding abuse and absolute 100% neglect) because we had to start somewhere, being new to these types of animals and with there being so many misleading interenet sites/ pet stores and not having resources like HC available or just unknown to us, we have all had our share of learning experiences. So I walk into my friend from works house and there is this poor thing, a 3+ foot BP sitting in a 10gallon tank, no hide(s), very little (probably old) water, no digital thermos, nothing. Just reptile carpet and a small bowl of old water. Not even a basking light of any sort. So I get him home and check him out, he seems to be just fine... He looks like he has retained his eye caps so has some problems seeing and just overall I can tell he was stressed. So I got him set up in a little larger of a tank with one hide fresh water, basking light, digi thermo, and paper towels (the repti carpet smelt like meldew) and tomorrow I will be meeting up with this lady who has a set up already waiting for him. I took a lot of care looking for a new home for this guy, i just couldnt let him fall back into a situation he was currently in.. But I just thought that I would share my first reptile rescue with everyone. I told the lady that I expect emails with pictures to see how he's doing..

Re: First Reptile Rescue.

That's how it all starts, watch out they might dump a box of iguanas on your porch next. Good luck re-homing those little pests to good people.

You should definitely print out the HC caresheet and send it with the snake!

Re: First Reptile Rescue.

Congrats! That is how it all starts! Just be careful as Lacey said. I think she was referring to the box of iguanas I had dumped on my porch a few months back. It was quite a shame as it was freezing outside.

Personally,, I dont tell just any old person where I live, it helps to cut back on the dump and runs. There is nothing like waking up to a bunch of iguanas that you have no where to put because you are already past your happy capacity. I also loved the Russian tort I found in my garden at the last house. I guess they thought I was dumb and would think that it just strolled in there all by itself, lol

Re: First Reptile Rescue.

lol, there are some dumb people out there. Well the people I gave the ball to were very knowledged on many different reptiles. They seem to be very compasionate about rescuing reptiles and other animals, and we're so excited to be able to help the ball out. I told them to email me with an update on the bp and to send many pictures. We talked for an hour about many people out there who have been mislead and just overall niave about housing animals in general. But luckily enough I was smart enough not to tell anyone where I lived, i just stated that I was located in the SW part of town, and we met on the south east side of town, because they lived outside of town. So I HOPE I don't get a box full of anything. And since I live in an upstairs apartment, i pray no one climbs my balcony and leaves a russian tort, lol.. im sorry I couldnt help but laugh.

Re: First Reptile Rescue.

Climb the balcony? Why not just toss him like a football?
