Help for a Rookie
Hi Folks,
I have a new ball python, just got him home yesterday. My concern is that he poked around for around an hour after putting him into the enclosure then went into his hide-out. He has not come out since and its been around 24 hours, I can see that he is moving around in there, but he's not coming out.
My temps and hummidity have been a little off, but I think I have it all figured out now. The cool side is around 80, warm side 90, and hummidity is around 40-50 which I know is a little low. I have a massive water bowl in there and an misting which brings it up for a short time to around 65-75. I am using astro terf right now, but may have to switch to the wood stuff if it doesn't get better.
Any insite on what going on with my snake? Is this normal as he is just getting used to the enclosure? When should I expect regular movement?
Thanks..

Re: Help for a Rookie
Hello,
First off, welcome to Herp Center! It typically takes a snake a few days, or up to a week, to acclimate to its new surroundings. A change in habitat is often very stressful on reptiles and they need this time to adjust.
During this acclimation period, you want to limit your contact with your BP as much as possible. If you are handling him, or constantly checking in on him, you are adding additional stress.
You should also keep in mind that a BP will indeed hide most of the day as they are a nocturnal species and are most active at night.
If you haven't already, have a look at our caresheet on Ball Pythons:
Ball Python Caresheet (Python regius) - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database

Re: Help for a Rookie
Thanks for all the info, its greatly appreciated.
I am still having that problem with humidity in the tank, it has the screen top which I have put foil covered cardboard on top off to keep the heat in and I was hoping this would help with the humidity loss as well, but no joy. I would like to stay with the artificial tuff if possible... I have one large water dish in the tank now, but its just not working, right now its sitting at 35% with out any misting for the last couple hours, so that dish is not making much difference. Its a cold Canadian winter I am batteling with low humidity, summer should be no problem but thats still 3 months away
Any ideas? All I can think of is adding a humidifier to my room to keep the room at 50% so the tank should be a bit higher and sit around 60. This seems overkill though...

Re: Help for a Rookie
Try putting the water bowl directly under the heat lamp.
Humidifying the room is also an option.
Not sure about Canada but you can get a hot air vaporizer in the States for under 20 dollars.
