We have to keep our thermostat on 60 in the wintertime or else our bill is way over $300/month. I understand completely what you mean. I wear lots of clothes and sleep under 10 pounds of blankets at night When we still had our snakes, I had to insulate the heck out of our tanks in the winter, and turn the heat lamps down on the tanks in the summer or they would get too hot without the house ac on. I can't even imagine trying to keep things right in the house for a free-roaming snake, especially in the winter, if free-roaming snakes were a good idea, which they are definitely not.

Oh, and I meant to say earlier... that is horrible!

Re: Free Roamer
You also live in Florida! Some of us live where it gets much colder. (Although, not so much this particular year here.)

Re: Free Roamer
I live in Florida too, but as I said before when we run the heater any higher than 60 our bill is more than $300! Maybe it's because our house was built in 1979, and it's probably full of cracks and crevices that let hot/cold air in (or out) depending on the season (a free roaming snake would certainly find one of them and go outside!). We can't afford to make it more energy efficient yet though, at least not right now. *sigh*

Re: Free Roamer
I don't know what utilities run in Florida, but in MD they just took a 50% hike and are borderline ridiculus, my family never has a bill less than $400 back home and that is with climate control at 65.
In SC I never have a bill over 50 dollars, but I use the iguana cage and other heat lamps for heat, it is amazing how well that works, house stays roughly 75, and in the summer we open windows and run fans to create circulation and it never gets too warm. Except in the living room that gets pretty hot, but we never really hang out there, that is more of Ira's playground, I lizard proofed it, and almost all summer he plays in there.

Re: Free Roamer
I'd forgotten that the snakes' heat lamps used to help keep the kitchen warm. Wish I had them now, although the lamps are the smallest reason I wish I had them. I do still miss my snakes!

Re: Free Roamer
This is my snake, also (don't get confused we are NOT the same person )and I was wondering if anyone has a room specifically for their snake. Not truely a free roamer, but maybe a closet sized area built for one. I just think that would be neat. We want a house with a reptile room one day, i can't wait.
Oh...and yeah. he does blast the AC or heat when he gets A LITTLE hot or cold....haha...i'm sure that our bill would be even lower. Sorry to hear about your insane electric bills...we live in a little house though. Ours will get there one day, i'm sure
