Re: Bedding question

Hm... so carefresh is ok? K, good. I'm comfortable and familiar with it so that's probably what I'll use.

And usually, to feed him so he wont associate my hand with food.... i'll take him out for a while, just ahve him relaxed with me... have someone drop the mouse in his tank while we're out and about then i'll put him in and he;ll eat. But if it's the carefresh then yeah I might put him else where.... i dont want him accidentaly eating anything.

Thank you! =) it was very helpful... i acctually have another question about shedding... should I make another thread? I'll ask here anyway just in case (thanks for answering btw =)

Ok... he's shedding right now and he seems to be having a pretty hard time with it... like he's not sheding in one piece... its coming off in pieces.. I think it;s because of the humidity level.... my friend usually has the heater on so it's dry. He has a bowl to soak in though... and my friend gave him a warm bath today... and i'm going to see him friday, i'm going to buy a spray bottle to try to help the shedding on his head.... anything else I could do? I want him to shed well.... no big left over chunks that could cause discomfort...

Re: Bedding question

I would not use carefresh in a ball python tank due to their humidity needs.
The stuff is basically paper and if you keep paper damp, what do you get ?
Mildew!

Your snake would be better served if you supply him with a moist hide. Basically a covered plastic container, hole in the side, with damp sphagnum moss inside.

Re: Bedding question

I'm really curious about the fact that the snake kept getting the bedding stuck in its mouth even though it wasn't being fed in the tank. I have kept Ball pythons as well as other snakes for years on aspen, and cypress mulch substrates. I have never seen any of them get anything stuck in their mouths.

No, he was getting ALOT of it in his mouth.... he could barely breathe... I'd find him in his hide box, head up, huffing and puffing.... I'm not gona use coconut fiber again, I just dont trust it. Thanks though.

@ Merlin- I have no idea how he would do it. And I don't feed him in another tank. I would feed him in his tank, but when he ate, I'd always watch him to make sure he was ok and he was, he never injested any bedding. It was times he WASN'T feeding that i'd find him with the bedding stuck in his mouth.

What if I change the bedding out regularly? Or provide him with a moist hide box IN in the tank? Others seem to be using carefresh without a problem....?

Re: Bedding question

Oh... it actually wasn't coco-fiber... sorry, but I mean the bedding looked exactly like cocofiber.... so i'm kind of nervous to use it...

For one... If I had him here with me, if I found him like that... i'm comfortable helping him with it, to get it out. But I don't want to mess with his mouth too much, scared he could get mouth rot.... that scares me about him getting the bedding stuck there too...

And two... if my friend finds him with the bedding stuck in his mouth... scared he wont know what to do and I might not be able to get there, y'know?

Am I making too big of a deal of this? lol... i just want Akuma to be okay D:

Re: Bedding question

If he is consistently getting the stuff in his mouth and you are sure it isn't from when he is feeding then I would seriously look at the posssibity of a respiratory infection where he is opening his mouth to breathe. Snakes don't normally go thru their bedding with their mouths open.

Re: Bedding question

i use carefresh for my snakes as they don't have a high humidity need, i don't have ball pythons so I wasn't really thinking about humidity problems. but when my snakes are having trouble shedding I usually put a moist hide in there to help them out. i don't usually have problems with shedding though a trick that has worked for bad sheds is putting the snake in a pillowcase with dampened towels and tying the pillowcase shut so the snake can slide thru the towels and help ease shedding. you might try that.

though you may want to see a vet, snakes don't usually huff or puff or have hard times breathing unless there's an infection.

Re: Bedding question

No no no... he's FINE other wise... he was only huffing and puffing because he had the bedding stuck in his mouth, he couldnt breathe well... he was fine once it was out. He's back to normal, he never has his mouth open.... and he only got the bedding stuck in his mouth TWICE out of the whole time....

He's not acting any different now, still curious, active when I hold him sometimes, active at night, he's feeding and defecating well, aside the bit of difficulty shedding... he's doing fine. I just dont want him to END UP getting something that's why I want to be careful about the bedding...
