Snake cage/ feeding
My snake's cage is heated in two ways: an under the tank heater and a lamp.
There is about 2 inches of wood chips in this cage. On the side with the under the tank heater there are no wood chips, just a square piece of two layer card board. The tank and the substrate were absorbing nearly all of the heat, thats why I set it up the way it is now. On top of the piece of card board he has a square hide box with two ways to get in and out.
Ill try and get my camera working and get some pictures posted here soon.
He has eaten three 5 gram fuzzies and three 7.5g small mice and has yet to produce a decent sized bowl movement. He as produced three white, cottage cheese, like stools. Each being about half the size of a gummy bear.
I was planning on feeding him the 7.5g small mice untill I see decent sized brown stool in his cage. Maybe he wasnt getting fed enough at the pet store, because he has eaten everything I have offered him so far.
Can you over feed a ball python?

Heres some pictures of his cage. The circular thermometer and humidity guage are on the hot side of his cage. The strip thermometer is on the cold side. If you look closely you can see his head poking out of his hot side hidebox. I just took these pictures 10 mins ago. Don't worry. Those are not cedar wood chips you see in his cage.

Re: Snake cage/ feeding
Its harder for them to digest if you are feeding that much at one time. You need to increase the prey and lessen the number of intake. Its not good for them. Also, I would not let the sun shine directly onto the glass. It works as a magnifying glass and can heat up the tank and then fry your animal.

Re: Snake cage/ feeding
Hey just some advice, because I made this mistake, those round thermometers dont work well ( in my case). You should get a digital one with a probe... They have really cool ones at walmart they are called accurite indoor outdoor thermometers with hydrometer.... And they are 11 usd and the probe part goes on your hot side (on top of substrate unless you use newspaper) and you put the unit on your cool side and it reads the cool side ambiant temp....
Made my critters lives much better (not to hot not to cold) and it has alarms you can set if your setup gets too hot or too cold, even if there isnt enough humidity
(I almost fried one of my snakes due to those round ones)

Re: Snake cage/ feeding
Ipanda is correct. those temp guages really are measuring the temps of the glass, not the enclosure.

Re: Snake cage/ feeding
Ball python metabolism is pretty slow. It usually takes a week or so after eating to deficate.
If, as you suspect, the snake hasn't been getting enough to eat there may not be enough to need to "go"
The white material is called urates and is the reptile equivalent of urine.

Re: Snake cage/ feeding
yeah digital is the way to go.And you should feed every 7 to 10 days .Unless its a baby then it should be every 5 days. And do you pooh on demand lol. My 2 Bp eat every friday with out fail and only pooh maybe every 3 weeks . if you feed to much you will bind them up they cant digest fast enough . it will constipate them .if you cant pooh do you eat and eat till it comes out I think not lol
