New royal, not 100% sure on husbandry
Hi, am new to this forum, im hoping someone can give me some quick points on rights and wrongs with royal husbandry.
I have 2 corns and 2 BD's already so am not a total beginner but dont know much about royals.
I was given a chance to buy a royal at a uper low price and could not refuse, so I now have it.
Here is what I have sorted so far:
- 24"x12"x18" (WxDxH)
- aspen substrate
- hides cool and warm
- large water dish
- Under Tank Heater pad
- there is what looks like a 60w (cant really make it out) heat lamp, not covered so is open to touch (bad I know) and I am not sure if this is necessary.
- temps are 85F warm end and 70F cool end
- i assume the feeding size rule applies to snakes in general (1.5x the width of the snakes thickest part)
- the humidity is currently at 65%
Ok so im hoping that will give a general impression. Oh yeah, the snake is approx 16/17" long, and I am told it is seven to eight months old. Its thickest part is just thicker than an inch in diameter.
It has some left over skin from previous sheds but am working on those as I write lol.
Right, done, any advice very very welcome! Ta

Feed its a large mouse or rat pup should be big enough now for that make sure you can see a lump in it when fed.Up the humidity for now to help with shed. Most imprtantly with royals is don't worry if they go off feed!!! it happens some people have had them stop for 6 months.Only be worried if it is looseing weight.

Check out our caresheet
Ball Python Caresheet
You need to bump your temps up a bit. You want the warm end about 90ish with the cool end about 75-80. A night time drop to about 75 is fine.
I usually feed a rodent about the size of the animal at its widest point.
The 1 to1-1/2 rule is the maximum size recommended

Great so all seems fine. What about the heat lamp though? Is that necessary? Obviously for the temps but what about it being touchable by the snake, are royals not likely to go near it? What is a suitable cover for the lamp? The lamp is within the enclosure not outside of it.
Here is a picture.

you can get a cage for it.OR just make sure there is nothing the nsake can get on to get to the lamp.

I wouldn't chance it. Is it possible to remove the lamp to the outside of the enclosure.

not really it is a wooden enclosure (glass sliding doors).
if I fit a cage to the bulb, is there another material other than metal that is readily available as im guessing the metal mesh would get hot

Use the metal mesh, or hardware cloth and make a cage for it. Not like right up to the bulb, maybe make it like 6X6X10 or something. That what it will be a bit away from the bulb and not get as hot. Ive not personaly use a heat bulb in a tank or used a mesh around it. Others here have they maybe a bit more help on that.

you could always cut a hole in the top of the enclosure , screen it over and put the the lamp outside with a box built around it to contain the heat. alternatly you could use the cage method as Nate suggested but be very careful that there are no sharp edges or tight places where the snake could get into troublel. And trust me if there is a way to get into trouble they will find it!
You might want to check out one of our members post regarding what happened with her snake and a caged heater.
