Emps are boring

I've noticed that most people, including here, who want or own scorpions have or are getting Emps... and I just wanted to warn you all that these are not the best Scorpions to start with unless you plan on handling(highly unreccomended as you could have an allergic reaction and it hurts).

Not necessarily all of them but most of them tend to spend all their time in hiding and aren't very aggressive even while feeding. This is what usually leads to people getting rid of them and never getting another.

I have quite a few friends who have some scorpions, and I owned an Emp a couple months back but had to get rid of it when I moved in with my grandmother but if I hadnt had friends with other scorps I dont think I would of wanted another. I know many people recommend these but I would not unless you plan to handle them. EMPS ARE CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST HANDLING SCORPS BECAUSE OF NOT BEING AGGRESSIVE.

What I would recommend for starter scorps, unless you plan on handling, is C. gracilis(florida bark scorpion), or H. arizonsis(desert hairy). They are much more active and more aggressive but just understand this is not always true as it differs from scorp to scorp and that this is just my opinion and my warning.

Also my recommendation any scorpion you plan on getting make sure you look up the living requirements of it before you get it as not all scorpions are from the desert(i.e. Emps are from the rainforests), which tends to be a common assumption.

Sorry for the long post but Emps get on my nerves.... lol

If this helps anyone I feel like I succeeded in much more than just a rant!

I have over 10 species of scorpions and emps are still one of my favorites, and not just because you can handle them. No offence but it gets on my nerves when people consider the more harmless species in scorpions and tarantulas boring. Emps are good scorps because they get big, can be handles, non aggressive, good eaters, cool to watch eat, very hardy, easy to breed, easy to care for, etc...

Sorry that you dont like emps because they dont entertain you to your likings.

P.S. yeah bark scorpions are cool. Nice colors, aggressive (which may not be good for some) and can live in a communal set up (like emps)

Anyways sorry but I just cant stand bashing of a certain species.

the only reason I was ranting is because so many tend to get them first get bored with them get rid of them and never get another scorpion for the fact that the emp wasnt very interesting and they dont realize that there are more active and interesting to watch ones out there.

I just think you have to be able to of had a bit more experience with all scorpions to really appreciate Emps and that a beginner may not appreciate them as much as someone with more experience

Yeah I'm going to have to agree with your second post. Beginners tend to want something cool that entertains them (not that emps dont fufill this)

They want to see something that runs around and stings whatever the **** is in their way.

Now I'm not saying ALL beginners but a good majority.

It's like beginners with Rose Hair tarantulas. They get upset with them because they fast for so long. That also tends to make the owner nervous "OMG SHE HASNT EATEN ANYTHING IN MONTHS!!!"

Hey Superman, I agree with the Hadrurus (Desert Hairy). They are a much more active scorp then the emps. I have heard that the Heterometrus spp (Asian Forest Scorps) are more active than emps but I have never kept any myself.

Well this thread's name really aggrivated me right on when I put my eyes on it. I will say that my 2 year old emp is actually just a little less active than my Leopard Geckos, lets me handle him, and is very beautiful and large. He doesn't quite care about prey in his tank for about 5 minutes and lets prey walk by him and some times on him. But after that he get really mean and nasty towards that prey and goes insane, which I must say is really fun to watch. If people are not going to take time to read care sheets and know about emperor scorpions activity and whole personality then they shouldn't of even own a emp. People should know all about the pet they are getting or have and be ready for the lazyness, or crazyness. Although I have heard the bark scorpion is a great scorp, I still would reccomend a emp for a beginners scorp.
