Goliath
Well, My goliath is taking full grown mice now.I've been trying to feed him something else but, Large crickets are are a very small meal. I've heard that the calcium from the bones can sause molting problems. I need some really big softshell invertabrates like they have in S. America. Any body know where I can get some?

Re: Goliath
Would millipedes be a reliable and resourceful meal? I know those can be purchased in the pet trade.

Re: Goliath
Well, I don't know of anyone selling feeder birds. Plus they have bones with calcium.

Re: Goliath
Hello,
I thought the Goliath was also known as the "Goliath Bird Eater".

That names not accurate occording to the people at a Tarantula forum that I've gone to. He could probably take one but, One good peck from a sharp beak...
I've thought about those roaches. They are Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Living in the deep south I'm hesitant in bringing those in because I've been told that they reproduce just as fast as any other roach. If a couple got out... I don't want to think about that!
The guy at the exotic pet store refuses to carry them because he says he'll get over run. He says he can get me a couple but he won't keep them at his store.
I was thinking about where I might be able to find some large locusts.

Re: Goliath
Millipedes are rather hard-shelled, and as mentioned they are poisonous. I too would recommend cockroaches. There are many species to choose from that exhibit different traits. Some can climb glass, others cannot. Some can fly, others cannot. And some breed more readily than others.
Locusts are definitely larger than crickets, but can be harder to obtain in the US than they are in the UK (I don't know why). If you can find a supplier, they may suit your needs. They're not as big as they look though, with much of the body being wing membrane and spiny legs. Some places also sell hornworms (large caterpillars of sphinx moths, Manduca sp.)

Re: Goliath
I've never really been a fan of feeding T's vertibrate prey, it can be done and is good if you have to take a long vacation as one mouse and thats it for the month. It's ok to feed more smaller feeder items to inverts. About 6-10 large crickets should do the trick every week. All my inverts of all sizes feed on crickets or locust.
Goliath Bird Eater is the common name for T. Blondi though bird eater is a translation of a local term for any trantula, just as in Asia trantulas are called earth tigers, in Germany their all birdspiders (Vogelspinne), the US trantulas, and in Africa Baboon spiders.
