HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
Ok I just responded to a god awful scream in my 6 year old daughters room, there was a huge spider that crawled across her on the bed. It was something that I have never seen before. Sorry but I did squish it,,,,,,runs and hides,,,,,, but here is the problem, after looking it up on the internet as to what it might be, it looks like a hobo spider... That is not good from what I read. Now here is my question, if there is one is there going to be many more around?? From what I read they are dangerous to people, especially little kids and the elderly.
Do I need to call an exterminator or what? I also cannot risk one of these getting in my enclosures, I dont know if they can even treat reptiles for this.
I am totally creeped out now!

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
If it was me I would be straight out to walmart or lowes somewhere that sells things to kill them, lowes do pest strips which are good just cant have any pet Tarantulas or crickets around, I got pest strips that worked great killed all the roaches everything, I just bought crix what I needed and my friend Tarantula sat for me for a 2 months, havent seen a ant spider, roach or anything since , They work alost instantly.

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
I don't know that they live in family packs, but if you want to be positive, I'd try to find a way to kill them. There is this powder that eats away at the poor bug's exoskeleton and kills off entire colonies of ants or roaches. You might try something like that around the outside of your house to keep them out and away.

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
They can give a nasty bite, but apparently 50% of the bites are 'dry' I wouldn't just to the worst possible conclusion, we have a ton of spiders around here that look like hobos (even more that look like hobo's after they have been squished into an unrecognizable mass)
Get some of those sticky spider traps and put them under all of the beds and near doors and open windows to make yourself feel better about it.
We've treated dogs for recluse bites, but I am not ure that the spiders could bite through a lizards rough skin.

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
I am really worried now! I put in a call to my bug man. He will return the call later tonight. I am worried about letting Oscar outside to graze and enjoy the sun. Where there is one there has to be more. I cant imagine having to have this house sprayed! I will have to coordinate with a vet that can board my reptiles for a day or two, which that vet is 2 hours away!

I know you don't like bugs, but I think you might be jumping the gun a little...most people would squish it and forget it.

Especially since you dont know for sure it was a Hobo. Relax, if you see another, squish it too.

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
It seems I did not see your first post before I posted my second, lol.
I do worry a little, or should I say a lot,,,,, My oldest son was bit by a wolf spider when he was a year and a half old, that landed him in childrens hospital for 5 days as he had such a horrible reaction to it. He actually had to be stuck on oxygen as he was having trouble breathing. He was VERY ill for days,,it was scary.
I was told that was an unusual reaction, even for a toddler, so I have always been very careful as to spiders and such with him, as I was told to do.
However he is much older and heavier than the 25 pound baby he was then, lol. Still makes me nervous,, he still has the scar it left on his foot. i am not sure if it is his chemical makeup that leaves him having a very hard time with spider bites or if that was just a fluke.

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
He may be allergic to the spiderbite. Just as some people can get sent to the hospital from the sting of a honeybee while others just pull the stinger out and go on their way.
On the subject of no pest strips, do NOT use them around your animals. At one tiem they were used to control mites in reptiles but it was discovered that same substance that kills the bugs can cause neurological damage in reptiles, particularly young ones.

Re: HELP!!!!! Hobo spider?????
I will not use pest strips, I do not need to cause a lot of problems with my animals. I am waiting to see what the bug man says. If he does come out to spray, I will board them all. Who knows maybe I will leave them there an extra day or two and take the kids camping or something fun like that.
