My Anoles

Hi I have a couple questions to ask you.

1. I have 2 green anoles anoles 1 female and 1 male. For some reason they are always brown I have done everything that other forums have told me to do and it hasn't worked if anyone has some insight that would be great.

2. For some reason the females hides a lot and her stomach is yellow?

3. My parents really like the setup of a Chinese water dragon cage. And I was wondering if would be alright to have that kind of setup with my anoles seeing as they spend most their time in the trees

Re: My Anoles

1. Tell us how you have everything set up and we will try to help you. Some anoles are just brown, but sometimes stress can make them brown. Tell us tank size, heat, humidity, lighting, and foliage in there.

2. She may hide a lot, depending on how your setup is. What is your substrate?

3. Yes, anoles would do ok with a vertical setup.

Re: My Anoles

ok so my tank is 32 gallons, a have a heat lamp in the middle and a uvb bulb right over where they hang out most of the time. the heat stays around 80 and goes down to about 65 at night. my humidity is always around 60 because I read on a web site that that was fine. there are two small exo-terra plants in the corner over a log that the female hides in alll the time, on the other side there is a large exo-terra waterfall
between the two ends runs a vine underneath they have there food bowl, and a couple rocks.

for substrate a have a mixture of zoo-meds repti bark and some peat moss.

and great so you think that could have some fish in the bottom of the tank and not have to worry about them falling in?

o and also do know of any other reptiles that can live with anoles?

Re: My Anoles

I would not mix reptiles, its only asking for trouble (aggression, injured animals, etc..), plus that tank is about how much 2 anoles will need.

I would try adding some cross branches (think tree) and maybe a real plant. A pothos would do really well without much work. Or go to Walmart and pick up some fake vine/plant for $5.

Try to create a warm side and a cool side to the tank. Make the warm side where they bask. They need a spot to get away from the heat, and with the lamp right in the middle, her only option may be to burrow. This could be why her tummy is yellow too.

What brand/type/strength is the UVB bulb, and is it shooting through any screen? If so is the screen really fine like window screen, or is it wider holes?

Re: My Anoles

5.0 might be too "bright" for them. I use 2.0 on mine, and they are doing well.

All of mine have been brown lately, it is something I have noticed. The change season to season, even in a controlled environment such as your house. And what type of bulb is it? Is it the long tube kind, or one of those spirally ones?

And are you 100% positively sure that your female is a female? I had one, whom was a female all her life, who suddenly grew a dewlap and some spores over night.

Sounds to me like your screen might be too fine, and is blocking most of the light.

If you can, could you put up some pics? I love Anoles.

Re: My Anoles

Those spirally ones hurt their eyes I think.

Put the heat lamp on one end if you haven't already.

If I were you I would cut some of those wires from under the uvb bulb so more uvb can pass through, fine mesh will cut all the benefits from the UVB bulb.

I have found that only the 5.0 and 10.0 spiral bulbs hurts eyes and caused my reptiles to hide. The 2.0 is worthless if you are using it for UVB, if you read on the box you will see that the 2.0 is only to provide more light and should be used with another UVB light. Once again one of those products that are only there to make money and nothing else.
