anole forum!!!

Hello to all:
I just want to start out by saying thanks to everyone who created the Anole forum. I have been breeding anoles for over 10 years and I am here for advices. Feel free to pm as well.

However, I do have one strong belief:
Regardless of their price, anoles are not feeders and shouldn't be used as feeders. They do not contain enough nutrients for other reptiles so I wouldn't suggest trying.

Thanks again,
Anatasia Netieb

anoles as feeders?

Now, I absolutely love the little guys, they're wonderful animals, entertaining to watch, etc.

However, some species of snakes just won't take anything other than lizards...and I also love vine snakes.
I hear that some newly hatched blood red corn snakes will only take green anoles as a first meal (no other species). Once they are eating, they can be scented over to mice, and quickly learn to eat unscented mice.
Some vine snake species can also be converted to mice...

As for their nutritional content, I can't imagine it's any worse than a house gecko's. If a snake is adapted to eat only lizards, an anole is as good a choice as any other.

However, what I definitely disagree with is the practice of using wild caught anoles as feeders, simply because they are "cheap"....anoles should be treated with more respect, and their wild populations should not be diminished in order to propagate snakes in captivity. On top of that, they're full of parasites and may transmit disease...a truly poor choice for a food item. Captive bred anoles and geckos would be wiser and far more ethical.

I don't think there is any reason why a person cannot love a species, and also recognize it as a food item for another species that they love. In fact, I think that you should like the animals that you use to feed your reptiles...I've actually heard of people who keep snakes as much because they dislike rodents, as that they like snakes! This sets a precedent for mistreatment of feeder animals, which is completely uncalled for.

If I had the space, I would be keeping several colonies of anoles, and breeding them for size, color, and health...the "culls" I would use to feed longnosed green vine snakes, which I also want to keep a breeding pair of. The adults may be difficult to switch to mice, and the hatchlings would definitely want lizards as their first meals.

I like house geckos, too, by the way...<lol> The small lizards can have extremely engaging personalities.

Iguanas and anoles....

should not be kept together anyways...Iguanas are vegetarians and eating crickets will in the long run shorten his life and cause kidney failure...and your friend is right, the iguana may eat the anoles not necessarily for food, but as a territorial issue...I would separate them right away....Lyn
