Green Anole Question
My green anole lizard had died. It got sick somehow, and within a day or two it died while I was at school. I was real sad, and that's how I got the Bahaman Anole. I want to figure out what happened. His tummy got all red and yellow, before it was a whitish color like they all are.
Can anyone tell me what happened or if I did something wrong? |

Re: Green Anole Question
It's near impossible to determine if anything were done wrong without knowing all of the basic care information.
How big was the enclosure? What were the temperatures? What UV light are you using? (Anoles require UVB.) What were you feeding it and how often? How long have you had it? |

Re: Green Anole Question
Welcome to the boards. Also, what substrate did you have in its enclosure?

Re: Green Anole Question
Ok!! Now we have something to work with.
69 is way too cold. You need a basking area of about 95. Without the right lights - your temps will not be high enough and thermoregulation cannot take place and organ failure begins to occur. Energy lights are not meant for reptiles. You need a UVB bulb which mimics the UVB from the sun. The UVB light helps the anole to go through a process that helps the absorption of calcium. Without that light they get a calcium deficiency called metabolic bone disease (Metabolic Bone Disease). A 5 gal. tank is not suitable for any reptile. It is good for holding the food for small lizards in the way of small crickets, but not for the lizard. You should have at least a 20 gal. which is still pushing it for regulating the temps, but it's an acceptable size. You didn't mention the food. What are you feeding it and how often?

Re: Green Anole Question
Hey prismwolf, thanks for the guidance. I believe he was still feeding it small crickets from the local pet stores. His Mother takes him once a week and gets a dozen. same with the Bahaman Anole now. As far as the lamp im not sure exactly which lite his mother has been letting him use as shes Energy Conscious and may limit this. As you can tell he doesn't live with me.
But, he is 10, and learning the use of the board and his pet at the same time, bare with him and I some. I'm familiar with the board usage but not the Pets But he sees dad on the Car forums and when I found this I thought "perfect", now hes got something to read and do. |

Re: Green Anole Question
Once a week for the crix is not enough either. 3-4 smalls on a daily basis is better. They will eat a few and the rest burrow in the substrate and usually perish without getting eaten. I have never seen an Anole eat the commercial dried food so more frequent trips to the pet store are in order. Another thing is they usually do not drink from a water dish and require mistings twice a day or so. A 29G tank is my tank of choice for Anoles as they prefer to climb to feel safe.

Re: Green Anole Question
Quote:
Without UVB light the anole cannot metabolize the calcium in its diet and will start to pull calcium from its bone structure just to survive. This will result in the anole's body becoming deformed and it will eventually die from it. And a fluorescent UVB tube will not draw that much power. Quote:

Re: Green Anole Question
We have all the patience he needs...:-D We know he's young, but he's doing great taking on the responsibility for more learning. How can you not have patience for that!! ;-)
