Emaciated Anole
I recently got a small (and when I say small I mean for her species, i think she just reached adulthood) Brown Anole from PetSmart. I believe she is emaciated, there are triangular bumps jutting up above her back legs (hip bones?) and her legs are tiny. I've been feeding her gut-loaded crickets for a few days, so she's doing a bit better, but does anyone know of any insects I can get live (she wont eat dead) that I can use to "fatten" her up?

Re: Emaciated Anole
Welcome to HCN. Waxworms might be an option, not very nutritious with a high fat content, but mixed with the crickets it could help fatten her up.

Re: Emaciated Anole
Waxies are good, but can be addicting. The bestthing you can do it vary the diet and feed lots of different healthy options and let her regain her weight over time rather than trying to make her fatten up in a hurry.
Can you tell us a little bit about your set-up?

It's a tall 20 gal. with faux moss on the bottom, (it's the only thing at the pet store I saw that I thought wouldn't hurt her) two small branches to climb, a basking light, a hood light, and a small hide log.
you can just barely see her on the highest end of the branch Also, I've been feeding her small crickets gut-loaded with Fluker's high calcium cricket feed. she's been eating 3/day 2 in the morning and one at night. |

Re: Emaciated Anole
You might want to add some more things to the cage, faux plants, vines, things that she cn easily hide in so she isn't stressed by not being able to find a hiding spot.
Also make sure you are keeping the humidty up, some of her skinniness might be attributed to dehydration because generally they wont drink standing water, they prefer to be 'misted' regularly. Do you know if the light in the hood is a UVB light? If so what is the stength and what is between the light and the lizard (glass, screen, nothing, etc)

Re: Emaciated Anole
i've been misting her several times a day. the hood light is old so the uvb is probably gone, i've been planning to get a new one as soon as I get some money, and there's a screen over the top

Re: Emaciated Anole
Yeah UVB is a big thing for anoles that most people overlook.
You need to make sure that the screen is larger than 1/4inch or it will filter out most of the uvb too, jut food for thought, and probably an easy fix with a visit to the hardware store.

The tank is 17" tall, isn't that too far for the UVB from the bulb? I'm planning on adding some fake plants to the back of the tank, they'll be under the hood, so that might elevate her.
what about Iguana Light brand? i founf one on ebay for 10 dollars, cheaper than a pet store nevermind, it's a zoo med My neighbors and I cleaned out an old shed behind their house. the people that used to live there did animal rescue. we found a heat cave, i'm thinking about clipping the cord off of it and letting her use it as a hide. |
