Very poorly anole!

Hi
We have two anoles that we've had for about 4 months or so now. At first they were both green then one turned brown and has stayed that way ever since. He was shedding well eating and drinking but no obvious problems. Over the last week or so he has rapidly lost weight and although we have been making sure they are getting plenty of food and water he doesn't seem to be improving. Is there anything we can do for him or is it just his time.
I'm going to seperate them and put him in a spare tank I have for the mo but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Very poorly anole!

Hello,

Are you supplying them with UV lighting? Anoles require UV exposure to metabolise their dietary calcium and phosphorus. (The UV produces natural D3 which aids in the absorption process). If they don't have any UVB within useable reach, that will cause many issues, and ultimately death.

Re: Very poorly anole!

Yes they have uv light and this is on through out the day and off at night. They have a stable temp and a good variation across their tank. i dust the crickets with anole dust by t-rex. I mist them twice a day and clean their tank regularly and throughly. i'm baffled as the other one seems fine??
oh and the uv light is above their tank seperated by wire mesh to stop them from climbing on it and getting out of the tank!

Re: Very poorly anole!

Hello,

Just a note about the mesh, in case you or anyone else didn't know already. If the mesh has openings less than 1/4 of an inch in size, most of the useable UV is being blocked.

If this isn't the case, and the anoles can come within 10 inches of the tube. (I am assuming it is a UV Tube?), then it could be stress causing the sickly anole to be in distress. That being the case, try separating them. I would separate them anyways in case the sickly one has a parasite or something else that could be passed to the healthy one.

Re: Very poorly anole!

Good luck and keep us posted. Hopefully it is simply stress and he bounces back for you!

Re: Very poorly anole!

Also, what type of UV light is it? It needs to say UVB. If it says UV, UVA, full-spectrum, reptile light, basking light, sun light, or anything other than UVB, then it's not a UVB light, guaranteed.

Another possibility is that they're both males. You can't house two males together, one will dominate the other. These two seem like the most likely scenarios.

Re: Very poorly anole!

Can you post a picture of the two of them. Maybe we can varify the sexes.
And seperating them is definately a good idea.
