I'm Astonished!!!!!!!

It's 4:00 in the morning, and I just walked in on my AFTs copulating! I am so ignorant about gecko reproduction that I didn't even know that they copulate in that manner. I thought they were like fish, she lays eggs, he fertilizes them, end of story. He has a penis - I could never have imagined a gecko penis. It's rather strange.

They didn't start laying eggs until I moved them from a 10 to a 20 gallon, and the pet store had told me they were both male, so I didn't even know this might come to pass. At the pet store, they had been in a max. 10 gallon enclosure for 9 months, and they didn't reproduce there either. So the switch to 20 was definitely the factor. Plus they seem happier. I put them in the 20 right before I left for a few months, so my friend had them and started telling me they were M&F, and that she was laying eggs once a month.

Well, I now need advice about exactly what to do if/when eggs come. I'd like to hatch them, if possible. We love our AFTs, and would welcome babies. I have no intention of becoming a breeder, but this would be neat for our family of humans and other species.

I hope you all don't mind the sexually graphic posting, and that you might be happy for us about this, and would really appreciate your advice.

Jennifer

Re: I'm Astonished!!!!!!!

Yes reptiles, unlike fish, do have sex. And to make things even stranger the males don't have one, but TWO organs. They are called hemipenes.

Re: I'm Astonished!!!!!!!

I have no idea about how to go about hatching eggs if they come, but I wanted to say congratulations! That's cool

Re: I'm Astonished!!!!!!!

Thanks for the congrats! I'm not surprised about the hemipene because it did appear that way to me. It looked sort of 'forked', like some snakes' tongues. I'll keep y'all posted. I can't get over it. Who ever would of thought that I would witness gecko sex during my time on the planet.

Be careful to make sure that she is getting enough Calcium and has enough places to run off to if she decides shes not in the mood. The boys can be relentless.
